Hot Rod Honeys - Horny And Hungry - CD on Mans Ruin Records

Hot Rod Honeys - Horny And Hungry - CD on Mans Ruin Records

Like Barenaked Ladies, the Hot Rod Honeys are an all-male band with a female-minded name - none of the Hot Rod Honeys are women, and their name is meant to be cute, funny and ironic. But the Honeys' music doesn't sound anything like Barenaked Ladies' alternative pop-rock. The Honeys' specialty is old school punk, and even though the band wasn't formed until 1996, their short, fast, raw songs (most of which are under three minutes) recall the classic punk of the late 1970s and early 1980s. Although the Honeys are from Belgium all of their lyrics are in English. And in fact, the Honeys sound like they could be from England. British pub rock and early British punk are strong influences, although the Honeys are hardly oblivious to American punk. One of their primary inspirations is the New York-based Ramones, whose influence they proudly acknowledge on a tune called "Love and the Ramones". But whether the Honeys are drawing on British or American influences, it is clear that they identify with punk's power pop side--and those punk-pop instincts are something they get from the Ramones as well as influential British combos like the Buzzcocks and the Damned. The Honeys have also been influenced by the garage rock and British Invasion rock of the 1960s; if you listen closely, you can sometimes hear hints of the Rolling Stones and the Kinks in the Belgians' infectious, energetic work.
Prong - The Peel Sessions - CD on Strange Fruit Records

Prong - The Peel Sessions - CD on Strange Fruit Records

Rising out of the expansive early '90s thrash metal landscape, New York's Prong carved a niche all their own with their minimalist urban take on the genre. After years working as a soundman at New York's CBGB's Tommy Victor (vocals/guitars) drafted doorman Mike Kirkland (bass) and ex-Swans drummer Ted Parsons to form Prong in the mid 80s. The trio's early independent releases -- Primitive Origins and Force Fed -- were extremely raw and betrayed their hardcore roots. By the time the group signed with Epic for 1990's Beg to Differ though, Victor and company had transformed into a highly-technical thrash metal outfit, shelling out clinical staccato riffs and start-stop rhythms peppered with subtle melodies and occasional bursts of speed. The album's title track was a minor hit, helping to put the band on the map once it received regular exposure on MTV's Headbanger's Ball.
Minutemen - Joy - 3 Inch CD single on SST Records

Minutemen - Joy - 3 Inch CD single on SST Records

The Minutemen were an American punk rock band formed in San Pedro, California in 1980. Comprising guitarist D. Boon, bassist Mike Watt and drummer George Hurley, the Minutemen recorded four albums and eight EPs before Boon's unexpected death in December 1985. They were noted in the Californian punk rock community for a philosophy of "jamming econo": a sense of thriftiness reflected in their touring and presentation.
New Model Army - Vengeance The Independent Story - CD on Progressive Records

New Model Army - Vengeance The Independent Story - CD on Progressive Records

To their impassioned cult of fans, New Model Army was one of the best post-punk outfits Great Britain ever produced. Combining the gut-level force of punk with the anthemic political fervor of U2 and The Alarm, as well as the urban protest folk of Billy Bragg, NMA sounded like few other bands mining similar post-punk territory. Their attack was hard, spare, and precise, but as time wore on, they were just as likely to deliver modern-day folk-rock replete with acoustic guitar, violin, and harmonica. Throughout their career, they remained staunch advocates of the British working class, occasionally tempering their leftist, anti-Thatcher political fury with moments of personal introspection. Their shout-along anthems often borrowed the football-chant feel of Oi! punk, but NMA was far less given to rabble-rousing, instead aiming for intelligent dissidence. True, that could sometimes translate into preachy sloganeering, but NMA's best work earned them tremendous acclaim in the U.K., where their singles regularly placed in the lower reaches of the pop charts. U.K.-specific lyrical references, coupled with visa problems that sometimes made touring difficult, unfortunately ensured that they were all but ignored in the U.S. Still, they maintained a strong following in Europe, and leader Justin Sullivan managed to keep them going for more than two decades.
RF7 - Satan VS The Workingman - CD on Alive Records

RF7 - Satan VS The Workingman - CD on Alive Records

RF7 is a long-lived, southern California punk rock band that began in 1979 by Felix Alanis and small time child star of the Sheriff John show Nick Lamagna. Felix also began the record label Smoke Seven Records and signed his band and many others who were ignored by the big labels then, such as Redd Kross, Bad Religion, JFA, Crank Shaft, Circle One, Sin 34, Youth Gone Mad, etc. From the beginning, the RF7 sound was not clearly punk but really what would be called today hardcore punk. Felix Alanis has always mixed middle class virtues with strange religious imagery in his lyrics. Nick Lamagna added guitar and music that had a twist more "rock" then some punks preferred. Walt Phelan added a drummer's drumming, and the bass player seemed to always change, with Robert Armstrong perhaps being the most solid recorded bass man from 1980-83, and again on 1990's classic Traditional Values album. On 1982's Fall In album, the band brought in super producer Geza X. The band continues today with their latest release (Addictions and Heartaches) on the Puke and Vomit label, which also re-released Public Service and Sudden Death compilation albums. Their early releases are available on the Grand Theft Audio label, as well as Bomp and Alive records.
Skin Yard - Inside The Eye - CD on SST Records

Skin Yard - Inside The Eye - CD on SST Records

Possibly the least appreciated of Seattle's early grunge pioneers, Skin Yard never broke out of the deeper levels of the underground. Unlike most of their peers, they never made it onto the Sub Pop roster, nor did their key personnel go on to breakout stardom with other bands. They did, however, contribute drummers to acts like Soundgarden and the Presidents of the United States of America, and guitarist Jack Endino became the local scene's pre-eminent producer and engineer, helming records for nearly every Sub Pop luminary. Endino and bassist Daniel House formed Skin Yard in 1985, at the dawn of the grunge era. They were joined by vocalist Ben McMillan and drummer Matt Cameron, the latter of whom had played with House in a group called Feedback. Skin Yard made their live debut in June 1985, and first appeared on record later that year with their contribution to Deep Six, a C/Z Records compilation that marked the vinyl debut of other important early grunge artists, including Green River, the Melvins, Malfunkshun, and Soundgarden. Initially tabbed as something of a sister band to Soundgarden, Skin Yard's early sound shared the thick, molten, psychedelic sludge of Chris Cornell and company's formative years. The two also boasted relatively complicated arrangements, which in Skin Yard's case would later give way to a more straightforward heaviness.
Sleepers - The Less An Object - Early San Francisco punk CD on Tim Kerr Records

Sleepers - The Less An Object - Early San Francisco punk CD on Tim Kerr Records

One of the earliest San Francisco punk bands, the Sleepers were also one of the first U.S. outfits to stretch the boundaries of the style into what is recognized today as "post-punk." Featuring the deep vocals and inscrutable lyrics of singer Ricky Williams (formerly a drummer with Crime), the Sleepers' material stressed ominous atmosphere, throbbing bass lines, and quirky instrumental shifts that challenged the rigid bash-'em-out structures of early punk. Particularly in their later days, their recordings looked forward to elements of goth rock, in both Williams' increasingly Bowie-esque vocal delivery and the sophisticated electric guitar textures. The Sleepers' obscurity is mostly attributable to their sparse output, which was limited to a 1978 EP, a single, and a 1981 LP, all on small labels with limited distribution. Williams, an instable character who was thrown out of an embryonic lineup of Flipper for being too weird, later sang with the Toiling Midgets, and died in 1992. Drummer Tim Mooney, also a member of Toiling Midgets, went on to work with American Music Club
Stone Fox - Totally Burnt - CD on Mans Ruin Records

Stone Fox - Totally Burnt - CD on Mans Ruin Records

Produced by ex-4-Non Blonde leader Linda Perry, the San Francisco quintet Stone Fox bears similarities to their Bay Area predecessors who broke the proverbial bank with their hit "What's Up?" Primarily female, drummer Brent being the only male, Stone Fox cranks out an album's worth of riot grrrl rock.
SWA - Evolution 85-87 - CD on SST Records

SWA - Evolution 85-87 - CD on SST Records

Blending the punk sounds of the SST label (Black Flag, Minutemen) with those of '70s hard rock sludgemeisters, SWA debuted in 1985 with Your Future (If You Have One). Led by former Black Flag bassist Chuck Dukowski and vocalist Merrill Ward, the group released Sex Dr. the following year and then added guitarist Sylvia Juncosa (also with To Damascus). XCIII followed in 1987, after which Evolution 85-87 summed up the first three albums. Juncosa left soon after to begin a solo career, with Phil Van Duyne replacing her on 1989's Winter. It was SWA's last album, though Juncosa released solo albums in 1988 and 1989.
Tar Babies - Honey Bubble - punk CD on SST Records

Tar Babies - Honey Bubble - punk CD on SST Records

One of the lesser-known bands on the legendary SST roster, the Tar Babies emerged from Madison, WI, with a distinctive brand of punk-funk that often drew comparisons to their labelmates the Minutemen, as well as the Texas-based Big Boys. Colored with bits of psychedelia, jazz, and avant-noise skronk, their music quickly progressed beyond their roots in hardcore and evolved into a scratchy but danceable, groove-centered hybrid complete with horns and George Clinton-style jamming. The Tar Babies were formed out of the ashes of Madison hardcore punkers Mecht Mensch, who disbanded in 1982. Guitarist/vocalist Bucky Pope, bassist Robin Davies, and drummer Dan Bitney debuted with the 1982 EP Face the Music, issued on local indie Bone Air. By the time of their second release, 1985's Respect Your Nightmares, their funk influence had begun to come into focus, which helped catch the attention of SST. The Tar Babies' first album for SST was 1987's Fried Milk, on which their punk-funk fusion truly crystallized. For the follow-up, 1988's No Contest, they played up that funk connection by adding horns -- most courtesy of woodwind player and multi-instrumentalist Tony Jarvis -- and even flirting with Washington, D.C.-style go-go. Their third SST album, 1989's Honey Bubble, also proved to be their last. After a brief hiatus, during which some of the band's personnel shifted, Pope reconvened the Tar Babies, now with second guitarist Bobby Vienneau and new horn player Andrew Lawton; this lineup cut one record, Death Trip, for the small Sonic Noise label in 1991. Following its release, the group disbanded permanently. Dan Bitney moved to Chicago and joined the seminal post-rock combo Tortoise as a percussionist and effects manipulator, also playing with Isotope 217 and several other local projects. Pope and Davies later reunited as the Bar Tabbies for local gigs, and Davies' son Jesse Collins-Davies was also a member of the preteen hardcore band Old Skull.
The Jack Saints / The Idiots - Split - CD on Mans Ruin Records

The Jack Saints / The Idiots - Split - CD on Mans Ruin Records

The Damned - Not The Captains Birthday Party - French Import CD on Demon Records

The Damned - Not The Captains Birthday Party - French Import CD on Demon Records

Titular claims aside, that is in fact precisely what this late-'77 show is documenting via a concert at London's Roundhouse. Featuring the original classic lineup running through Damned Damned Damned-era songs, and a smattering of new ones, Not the Captain's Birthday Party? is short but good smash-and-bash fun, capturing a time when punk was still an honest feeling of the age and not something to wear or refer back to. While the studio recordings the group did best show their considerable abilities at making fiery, kicking rock and roll, this entertaining record still blasts through enough performance and energy. The recording itself is fairly flat, but still is remarkably clear (aside from a number of mic feedback squeaks), making it a much better document of the era than many of the similar live releases from the same time. The tensions that would eventually cause the first collapse of the group aren't in immediate evidence here. James is still the ruler of the musical roost, his guitar playing as rampaging as ever, while the rest of the band backs him up with the expected elán, if a bit ragged around the edges. Vanian himself is, as always, a wickedly charismatic frontman, with the rest of the band throwing in extra vocals or comments as appropriate (or not). Three of the first four songs later turned up on the not-quite-as-successful Music for Pleasure album, but the versions here have a reasonable enough fire to them, including "Creep (You Can't Fool Me)," and the goofy "Problem Child." Otherwise, it's first-album classics all the way -- while "Neat Neat Neat" is inexplicably absent, the ever-wonderful "New Rose" gets a deserved airing, as does the revamp of the Stooges' "1970," "I Feel Alright," and other great numbers like "I Fall," and the delicious "Born to Kill."
