Elton John - A Single Man - Vinyl LP in Gatefold Packaging on MCA Records 1978

Elton John - A Single Man - Vinyl LP in Gatefold Packaging on MCA Records 1978

After a dozen albums with lyrical collaborator Bernie Taupin, A Single Man (1978) represents Elton John's first full-length release away from their decade-long partnership. John's initial intent was to complete work on a Taupin-era remnant that had been on the back burner, titled Ego. However, he found himself with some interesting melodies and eventually teamed up with former Vigrass & Osborne member Gary Osborne. Also contributing to this album's different approach is producer Gus Dudgeon -- who had worked with John as far back as his debut long-player, Empty Sky (1969). The infusion of new musical associates takes notable effect on songs such as the opener, "Shine on Through," which John had previously worked up during the Thom Bell Philly soul sessions that produced the hit "Mama Can't Buy You Love." (That version is available as one of three previously unissued sides on the Complete Thom Bell Sessions EP.) Among the other standouts are the gospel-tinged "Georgia," the lengthy blues-rocker "It Ain't Gonna Be Easy," and the ultra campy, if not lightweight, "Big Dipper." The single "Part-Time Love" only made a nominal chart impact despite its catchy and danceable melody.

Christine Lavin - Attainable Love - Vinyl album on Rounder Philo Records

Lavin's genuinely witty compositions manage to be funny and deep at the same time, and her warmth as a performer gets the point across. Ten songs that debunk, explore and create the myths of contemporary romance, with straightforward, intimate production. Includes her dissection of "Sensitive New Age Guys."
Pete Shelley - Heaven And The Sea - Vinyl LP featuring members of the Buzzcocks on Mercury Records

Pete Shelley - Heaven And The Sea - Vinyl LP featuring members of the Buzzcocks on Mercury Records

Pete Shelley, the leader of the seminal punk band the Buzzcocks, actually had recorded a solo album in 1974, two years before the Buzzcocks formed. Released in 1979, Sky Yen was a collection of electronic music that didn't sound much like his full-time band's blistering guitar pop, yet it did contain the roots of his solo career. After the Buzzcocks disbanded in 1981, Shelley began a solo career which incorporated the electronic experimentations of Sky Yen with the pop sensibilities of his punk singles. Released in 1981, Homosapien showcased this musical merger and resulted in the U.K. hit single, "Homosapien." The following year Shelley released XL1, which added more guitar to his dance-oriented synth pop. Three years later he released his final solo album, Heaven and the Sea, which failed to capture an audience. Shelley then joined the short-lived band Zip; after its breakup, he rejoined the reunited Buzzcocks in 1988.
Chickasaw Mudd Puppies - 8 Track Stomp - Vinyl album on Polygram Records

Chickasaw Mudd Puppies - 8 Track Stomp - Vinyl album on Polygram Records

A primitive swamp-rock duo comprised of Ben Reynolds (vocals, electric guitar, percussion) and Brant Slay (vocals, harmonica, washboard), the Chickasaw Mudd Puppies were proteges of R.E.M.'s Michael Stipe, a fellow Athens, Georgia resident who teamed with John Keane to co-produce their 1990 debut White Dirt. Chicago blues legend Willie Dixon split production chores with Stipe for 1991's 8 Track Stomp, after which the duo called it quits; Reynolds later resurfaced as a solo artist.
Clive Gregson - Strange Persuasions - Vinyl album on Demon Fiend Records 1985

Clive Gregson - Strange Persuasions - Vinyl album on Demon Fiend Records 1985

Clive Gregson and Christine Collister were the most moving and memorable U.K. folk-rock duo to emerge since Richard and Linda Thompson. Gregson's wry tales of the ins and outs of love, sung in Collister's heartbreaking voice have earned the duo (and subsequent solo work) respect and a devoted following though commercial success and mainstream recognition have eluded them. Gregson (born January 4, 1955) was the founder of Any Trouble, a pub-rock/new wave quartet, in Manchester in 1975. The band's sound, and Gregson's songwriting and singing, reminded some of Elvis Costello, and Any Trouble was signed by Stiff, Costello's label. The band made several well-remembered but poor-selling albums, then split up in 1984.

Artie Traum - Life On Earth - Vinyl album on Folk label Rounder

During the 70's and 80's, Artie became an internationally known performer, appearing on stages in Europe, Japan and at the Newport Folk Festival, Philadelphia Folk Festival and Carnegie Hall. He also performed and co-produced the Woodstock Mountains Revue, a unique folk group that featured Artie & Happy Traum, Pat Alger, Jim Rooney, Bill Keith, Larry Campbell, John Herald and John Sebastian. Guest artists like Maria Muldaur, Rory Block, Eric Andersen, Paul Butterfield and Paul Siebel joined the group for recordings. The Revue recorded 5 classic albums for Rounder Records, and although Rounder allowed over 50 of their tracks to go out-of-print, the band is widely considered one of the premier folk groups of the time.
Gene Loves Jezebel - Promise - Vinyl album on Geffen Records 1983

Gene Loves Jezebel - Promise - Vinyl album on Geffen Records 1983

If bands like Siouxsie and the Banshees and Bauhaus can be considered the founders of post-punk glam, laying the foundations of what would turn into goth rock, then Gene Loves Jezebel followed closely in their footsteps with the debut, Promise. Careening, wailing guitar is matched by careening, wailing vocals from the two brothers, while forceful, semi-tribal drumming underlay everything on display. John Brand's production balances out brute force with careful texturing, allowing the group to showcase their power chops as well as their calmer, moodier side. Despite the unstable lineup at the time of recording, everything sounds like the product of a well-seasoned band, no doubt thanks to the Astons' considerable and happily justifiable belief in their own abilities. One of the more common but effective elements on Promise is a sense of quick, dramatic changes. Strong examples include the moody intro into explosive guitar roar on "Upstairs," the building roll of verses into a wordless yell on "Screaming for Emmalene/Scheming," and the sudden drop out of the music towards the end of "Psychological Problems." The Astons' near-interchangeable vocals conjure up images of desolation, highly suspect sex, freakish family scenarios, and insanity; theirs are not the most happy-go-lucky of lyrics, but they deliver them with an invigorating, about-to-crack energy. Songs often crackle with a nervous, giddy fear, while the music at its more restrained feels like an ominous call to doom. "Influenza," a deceptively calm instrumental, relies on wordless vocals from the band to increase the creeping sense of unease. Perhaps the strongest song is the most minimal: "Bread From Heaven," an allegoric, vicious slam on the English government for its treatment of Wales. The Astons' keening vocals sound like burnt calls of vengeance from beyond the grave -- an unsettling, effective demonstration of their musical skills. Later pressings of the album include the fairly poppy later single "Bruises," which also surfaces on Immigrant.
Salem 66 - Natural Disasters National Treasures - Vinyl LP on Homestead Records

Salem 66 - Natural Disasters National Treasures - Vinyl LP on Homestead Records

While Ethan James remains behind the production boards, Salem 66 welcomes both a new guitarist and drummer on their third album. Even with all the changes, the group is at their most accomplished on this outing; the guitars are appealingly rough-and-tumble, and the songwriting is more mature.
Solomon Grundy - S/T - Vinyl album with Screaming Trees Van Conner on New Alliance 1990

Solomon Grundy - S/T - Vinyl album with Screaming Trees Van Conner on New Alliance 1990

Solomon Grundy was a one-off side project that was led by Screaming Trees guitarist Van Connor. Screaming Trees used 1990 as a year of reassessment and to take a break from the tour-album-tour grind (throughout their history, friction has always reared its ugly head time and time again), and Connor used the time to record 11 of his original compositions, resulting in the outfit's self-titled release on the New Alliance label. Shortly after the album's release, Screaming Trees reunited once more and signed a major-label deal with Epic, effectively killing Connor's side-project almost as soon as it was born.
