Volebeats - Up North - Cassette tape on Safe House Records

Volebeats - Up North - Cassette tape on Safe House Records

The Volebeats' Up North is a folky, country record that's inviting and likable in its simple and uncomplicated presentation. Songs of longing, such as "Back in Your Heart," are driven with the locomotive shuffle of brushes on a snare, and garnished with the lonesome cry of a lap steel or Matthew Smith's single tremolo lead guitar lines. But what really elevates this record is songwriting that is ripe with memorable melodic content and an acute sense of lyrical phrasing. Just as important is the way in which the two principle writers and singers Jeff Oakes and Smith work off of each other vocally. Whether in unison or tight harmony, together or in counterpart fashion, their voices, backed by the low-key instrumentation, create a mood that captivates and brings these deceptively simple songs to life.
Uncle Tupelo - No Depression - Cassette tape on Rockville Records

Uncle Tupelo - No Depression - Cassette tape on Rockville Records

Uncle Tupelo's landmark opening salvo is the group's most rock-oriented album, steeped more in breakneck speed, punk crunch, and guitar dissonance than any of their subsequent efforts. Indeed, despite the presence of mandolins, fiddles, and banjos -- as well as inclusion of the title track, a faithful cover of the A.P. Carter classic -- the trio's vaunted country leanings are less musical than thematic on No Depression, thanks in large part to singers/songwriters Jay Farrar and Jeff Tweedy's acute depictions of rural, blue-collar life. Like the Replacements -- never more obvious an influence than on this LP -- Uncle Tupelo's songs paint grim, unrelenting portraits of aimless Midwestern existence, split between days working on the opening cut's "Factory Belt" and nights spent blurry-eyed and wasted ("Whiskey Bottle," "Before I Break"). Still, for all of the record's doleful cynicism -- virtually every cut nods toward dashed hopes, broken promises, and paralyzing fear -- there's an undeniable electricity afoot as well; by channeling the mournful clarity of country into the crackling fury of punk, No Depression brings new life to both musical camps.
Toyah - Ophelias Shadow - Cassette tape featuring Robert Fripp on Edition EG Records

Toyah - Ophelias Shadow - Cassette tape featuring Robert Fripp on Edition EG Records

Toyah Willcox (vocals) followed up the assertive and well-received Prostitute (1988) with the second entry into what she had planned as a trilogy, according to her essay in the 2003 CD reissue. The confrontational anger inherent in much of Prostitute has evolved into an even-tempered and quite possibly more feminine reflection of the artist on Ophelia's Shadow. Backing the vocalist are her co-conspirators from the criminally short-lived Sunday All Over the World: Paul Bevis (drums/percussion), Robert Fripp (guitars), Tony Geballe (guitars/computer), and Trey Gunn (stick/keyboards). They create a sonic patchwork of textures for Willcox that runs the gamut of the deliciously slinky opening title track to the nimble driving rhythm of "Homeward." The rich and visceral imagery in "The Shaman Says" foreshadows the likes of postmodern alternative singer/songwriters such as Tori Amos or Juliana Hatfield, with the theatrics of Kate Bush. The bright syncopated pop of "Brilliant Day" is a standout for the dreamy introduction and chorus that cleverly coalesces around the verses. In this context, the intricate melody is emphasized by the precision of the musicians. With an underlining techno motif, "Prospect" is a dark and slightly foreboding rocker, delivered in the spirit of Blondie's Deborah Harry. "Take What You Will" hearkens back to Prostitute with pointed lyrical objectification such as "Take what you will/Creeping 'round the hallway/Taking all the silver/Taking all my photos/Taking all the jewelry/Taking all there is of me."Fripp's fretwork punctuates the instrumental bridges and underscores the chorus as the tune moves along with a stealthy and almost anticipatory snarl. The best example of Willcox's highly underrated prose is appropriately enough on "The Woman Who Had an Affair With Herself," in which she elucidates the Shakespearian reference in the project's moniker.
The Roches - Can We Go Home Now - Cassette tape on Ryko Records

The Roches - Can We Go Home Now - Cassette tape on Ryko Records

The Roche sisters have been called oddballs more than once, and with good reason -- though their approach has generally been a sweetly appealing folk-rock fusion, there's always been something distinctly off-kilter about their sound. It could be the almost eerie blend of their three voices, or maybe it's their collective tone, which is often reedy to the point of girlishness; sometimes the way they're singing makes you wonder if you're missing a joke somewhere. "Move" and "You (Make My Life Come True)" are both perfect love songs with charms as straightforward as the plainspoken singing that delivers them. Ditto for the quirky but endearing "I'm Someone Who Loves You." But "Home Away from Home" deals in distressingly broad political stereotypes, and "When You're Ready" wallows in artsy self-indulgence.

The Jackofficers - Digital Dump - Butthole Surfers side project cassette tape on Rough Trade Records

The Jackofficers was a side project started by Gibby Haynes and Jeff Pinkus of the Butthole Surfers. They released their only album, Digital Dump, in 1990 and disbanded the same year following a brief club tour that found them simply hitting play on a walkman and standing there while it played. The music consisted entirely of samples manipulated and mixed on early computer software and f/x. Samples range from Jimi Hendrix spoken words to The Texas Chainsaw Massacre.
The Kinks - Phobia - Cassette tape on Columba Records

The Kinks - Phobia - Cassette tape on Columba Records

Released in 1993, PHOBIA was a welcome return to the STATE OF CONFUSION/GIVE THE PEOPLE WHAT THEY WANT-era Kinks sound. Forsaking the heavy metal trappings of their late eighties albums for MCA Records, Ray and Dave Davies focused on creating a strong batch of melodic, lyrically relevant songs. Though many Kinks fans still feel that this sixteen-song album should have been edited down to a concise, hard-hitting ten-song set, there's no denying that PHOBIA was the best Kinks album since 1983's STATE OF CONFUSION.The track that attracted the most attention was "Hatred (A Duet)," a rocking, seething duet between Ray and Dave Davies that seemed to draw its power from the celebrated real-life tension between the Davies brothers. Elsewhere, Ray Davies seems to have recaptured his gift for crafting perfect pop songs like "Don't" and "Scattered"--two excellent tracks that blend fragile melodies with poignant, thoughtful lyrics harking back to the classic Kinks songs of the '60s.
The Godfathers - The BBC Session - Cassette tape on Ducth East India Records

The Godfathers - The BBC Session - Cassette tape on Ducth East India Records

The Godfathers were founded by brothers Peter and Chris Coyne in London in 1985. Vocalist Peter and bassist Chris were joined by guitarists Kris Dollimore and Mike Gibson and drummer George Mazur. Coming ten years after Britain's punk explosion, they nevertheless built on that music's rage and force. Their debut album, Hit by Hit, was released in the U.S. on the indie label Link in 1986 and followed by Birth, School, Work, Death on Epic in 1988, which made the Top 100 bestsellers as the title song was played on album rock radio. Their third album, More Songs About Love & Hate (1989), featured the popular college radio track "She Gives Me Love," but was less commercially successful. They released a fourth album, Unreal World, on Epic in 1991.
The Beat Farmers - Viking Lullabys - Cassette tape on Sector 2 Records

The Beat Farmers - Viking Lullabys - Cassette tape on Sector 2 Records

The Beat Farmers enjoyed a cult following throughout the 1980s and early '90s until the untimely passing of lead singer/drummer/guitarist Country Dick Montana in November 1995. He was just 40, and he collapsed of a massive heart attack at the Long Horn, a bar in Whistler, British Columbia, in western Canada.
Sonny Burgess - We Wanna Boogie - Cassette tape on Rounder Records

Sonny Burgess - We Wanna Boogie - Cassette tape on Rounder Records

If you want a fairly definitive compilation of the Sun material by this minor rockabilly figure, but don't want to go the whole nine yards for the expensive import double CD on Bear Family, this domestic anthology is a recommended alternative. The 13 tracks contain six sides from his '50s singles (including the most noted, "Red Headed Woman" and "My Bucket's Got a Hole in It"), and seven other cuts from the '50s that were unissued at the time.
